Reflections on the weekly readings

Sunday, October 4th, 2015 - 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The focus of this week’s readings is the sacredness of marriage.  I urge you to thoroughly read the side bars on these readings as they are helpful in identifying a focus that is relevant to the children.  A good portion of this Sunday’s readings is not suitable discussion with children since they are not going to understand the sacrament of marriage as adults do and we also need to be sensitive to the fact that some children may indeed have parents who did not remain married and remarried.  It is enough to focus on the on the fact that marriage is sacred and through this sacred union of two people come children who are also sacred and blessed by God.

I like the creation story of how woman was created from the rib of man.  I have always thought that is why women and men are drawn to each other and to marriage…like two pieces of a whole trying to reunite as one again!  The Gospel reading shows how much Jesus loves children and how he wishes us all to be more like children in our love and our faith.  J  Don’t we all wish we could be like children?  Their Love is untainted and their faith pure!  Their thoughts are simple and not muddled with worry and anxiety!  That is how we can be like children!  But we have to LEARN how to release the worry and anxiety and give them to Jesus to carry for us!  We have to learn to trust the Lord and have FAITH that He is always there and will always take our burden!

Jesus shows the children how much he loves them and how he is never too busy for children and how he WANTS children to come to him!  Adults in their lives should be helping them toward Jesus.  Encourage the children to have a relationship with Jesus whereupon they can go to him at any time with their hopes, their love, their fears, their worries and their special prayers.  A prayer to Jesus can be as simple as a conversation at anytime and anywhere!   Prayers do not have to be formal, memorized writings but can be feelings expressed in our own words and spoken with sincerity and love to Jesus.
