Solomon asked for great wisdom, not riches for himself or long life. He asked for wisdom so that he could help others. God granted Solomon wisdom like no one ever had or would ever.
God asks us, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” What do we answer and what are we willing to sacrifice for the sake of God’s great gifts?
In the Gospel according to Matthew the kingdom of heaven is compared to a treasure buried in a field and when it is found by a man he sells every thing he has to buy that one field. The kingdom of heaven is compared to a merchant searching for fine pearls and when he finds a pearl of great price he sells all that he has and buys it.
These two comparisons help us to put into context the greatest gift God has ever given, salvation through Christ Jesus. God has placed before us a very great treasure that is ours for the taking but it requires sacrifice to obtain. You cannot hope to hold a gift of salvation at the same time as you are sinning against God. Like the men in the Gospel parables, we must sell everything to purchase the treasure! Give up sin to have eternal life. Give up what is not worthy to obtain that which is infinitely wonderful, and beautiful.
Each of us has known the desire for something really special and we have been willing to sacrifice to own that thing. How much more should we want to sacrifice to obtain God’s greatest treasure provided just for us?
The Psalm this week is Psalm 119: Lord, I Love Your Commands
Have a blessed week!
